Female Uber Driver Attacked With Beer Bottle In Delhi, Says Panic Button Didn’t Work

As we all know, the cases of violence against women are rising in the capital city Delhi with each passing day and the lack of safety measures is making it even worse. In a shocking incident, a female Uber driver got severely injured after two men allegedly attacked and attempted to rob her in Delhi’s Kashmere Gate area. She said that she pressed the panic button installed in the vehicle but it didn’t work.

On January 9, a 30-year-old female Uber driver named Priyanka Devi was on her way to pick up a passenger when two men allegedly threw a brick at the windshield of her car. When she got out of the vehicle to look at it, those two men asked for her phone, money, and car keys. Devi alleged that they tried to take away the car keys but when she resisted, one of them hit her on the neck with a beer bottle. After that, when she started screaming, a crowd had gathered so the men ran away. She further claimed that the two men took away Rs 1,500-Rs 2,000.

The female cab driver alleged that she pressed the panic button installed in the vehicle and even called Uber but none of it was helpful at the time of the incident.

An SOS or panic button is a crucial safety feature in commercial passenger vehicles. The button is meant to be installed by the Transport Department in all such vehicles and should trigger an alert to the police but according to the reports, it often does not work.

According to the reports, the female cab driver refused to file any complaint but the police have taken suo motu cognisance of the matter and filed an FIR under Section 393 (attempt to commit robbery) of the IPC (Indian Penal Code).
