6900 Complaints Of Domestic Violence Filed By Women With NCW In 2022

We’re not new to intimate partner violence. In our patriarchal society, the story of a husband beating his wife up to “discipline” her is not uncommon and unheard of. We come across such stories time and again. The domestic violence data is proof that women aren’t even safe inside their homes let alone outside which thereby proves that we have collectively failed as a society. As per the National Commission for Women data, 6,682 domestic violence complaints were received in 2021 and now in 2022, this number has gone up to 6,900.

The Covid-19 pandemic led to a spike in the number of domestic violence cases but now despite the pandemic nearing an end, the endemic of crimes against women is nowhere near an end. As per the data, there was a spike of 26% in domestic violence cases in 2021 as compared to 2020. According to the National Commission for Women, these 6,900 cases of domestic violence account for 23% of the over 30,900 complaints registered by the NCW across all the categories of crimes committed against women.

Looking at overall data on crimes against women, it has increased by over 30% in the last 2 years. In 2020, a total of 23,700 complaints of crimes against women were registered and in 2021, this number rose to 30,800. While the cases may have only increased by 100 with 30,900 cases in 2022, this goes to prove that the trend of crimes against women continues to rise even if it’s marginally.

Of the total number of cases a total of 55% complaints came from UP, 10% from Delhi and 5% from Maharashtra.

As per media reports, speaking about the spike in the number of complaints, the NCW chairperson, Rekha Sharma said that the rise is possibly due to the enhanced outreach by the organisation via public hearings and seeking action taken report as well as setting up a dedicated helpline number for women facing domestic violence to come forward and report the cases while seeking assistance. She further shared her observation and said that women are using their online platforms to seek help. The NCW chairperson concluded by saying that raising awareness to change the patriarchal mindset along with programmes for the redressal of complaints can aid in preventing domestic violence.
