Johnny Depp Supporters Allegedly Harassed Amber Heard Supporters In An Organised Twitter Campaign

According to a Bot Sentinel investigation released on Monday, hundreds of pro-Johnny Depp Twitter accounts propagated criticism of Amber Heard and attacked her sympathizers during and after this year’s highly publicised defamation trial. According to the investigation, in one instance, a pro-Depp troll made a bogus account using the image of the deceased kid of a “prominent academic” who tweeted solidarity for Heard and posed to be them.

The report states that trolls had increased their abuse and doxxed the academic’s family members. Furthermore, it stated that this unlawful action made the victim worry for her and her family’s safety. The academic’s identity and the security of her family were protected by not naming her in the report. The academic claimed that the harassment and abuse committed by Depp followers were unlike anything I have ever seen.

The extent of the abusive behaviour documented in the study did not surprise the anonymous academic. She added that she was surprised by how little well-known tech companies like Twitter and YouTube are doing to stop the harassment of women who use their services, despite the fact that they must be well aware of the problem. She further hypothesized that she believes the reason is that these businesses are directly benefited by the sales of the advertisements on this content; abuse and harassment are profitable. In order to combat targeted abuse and misinformation online, the nonpartisan research group Bot Sentinel was established in 2018. For the analysis, it examined 14,292 tweets using anti-Heard hashtags such “AmberHeardIsALiar.”

Researchers discovered 627 Twitter accounts with the sole purpose of spreading unfavourable information on Amber Heard and her supporters before, during, and after the trial. The study discovered that over a quarter of the accounts that tweeted derogatory hashtags about Amber Heard were established during the last seven months. According to the general nature of Twitter, a handful of accounts may create a lot of havoc, said Christopher Bouzy, the creator of Bot Sentinel. But in this case, there are almost 600 accounts that are almost exclusively about her, her supporters, and the case.

According to Business Insider, Twitter didn’t do enough to reduce platform manipulation and to put an end to harassment and targeted harassment of Heard and her supporters. A Twitter representative said the firm was looking into the report and would look into the accounts mentioned before taking action in accordance with the Twitter Rules. According to the article, Twitter basically left the women to fight for themselves with little to no support from the site.
