Does Mental Health Affect Your Reproductive Health? An Expert Gives Insight

A lot of women in recent times have come out and spoken about how difficult it is for them to get pregnant. There are numerous explanations for why a woman can’t conceive and one of the major reasons is mental health issues. There have been various studies have been conducted over the years that show a link between a woman’s mental health and the impact of it on her reproductive health. Depression, stress, and anxiety have been described as common causes of infertility.

In fact, Dr Rita Bakshi, a gynaecologist and founder of RISAA IVF, says that depression, stress, anxiety, and other mental health issues directly affect the hormones that control ovulation. In simple terms, a hormonal imbalance is caused that makes it difficult for a woman to conceive and affects her reproductive health in a negative way. She said, “Women with depression are more likely to go through perimenopause earlier than other women.”

And the fact of the matter is that many women struggling with mental health issues are aware of it and also do take steps to keep it in check. However, not many remember to look out for their reproductive health.

Yep, there are certain steps that you can take to keep your reproductive health in check while you’re struggling with your mental health issues. And trust me some of these steps are really simple. They are as follows:

1. Get enough sleep

Insomnia is one mental health issue that often creeps in when you’re struggling with it or any other issues. However, getting a good night’s sleep will help not just with your reproductive health but also with your mind.

2. Get enough physical activity

As someone who deals with a mental health issue – depression – I know that there are days when you would not even want to get out of bed, but pushing yourself a bit to just go for a 20mins stroll or do some yoga or some basic exercises will definitely help you feel better. This also will help in regulating your weight which will make it easier for you to conceive.

3. Choose healthy foods most of the time

I know the role cravings play for those dealing with mental health issues and to say to avoid them is easier said than done. So, I’d suggest starting small. Try replacing your cravings with a healthier alternative for the most part and take it from them. Eating the right nutrients, enough fiber, and staying hydrated will keep your reproductive health healthy and also boost your mood.

4. Keep a support network

When I’m down that spiral or just have a shitty day, I prefer to keep to myself. But the fact is communicating with people who know you well is extremely important – and I learnt this after I got the counselling I needed (still do). So, if not a lot, speak to your therapist, family, and or friends for some time every day and let them be there for you. Trust me, it does wonders.

Mental health issues impact the reproductive health differently in different women, but these some steps are common areas that can really help most women. So, give it a shot, see if it works for you, and don’t forget to take it one day at a time.
