In Karnataka, A Muslim Family Sponsored A Hindu Girl’s Wedding And Also Helped Her Family Through A Financial Crisis

When you’ve grown up in India, you know that there are a few controversial topics you shouldn’t discuss. Religion, politics, cricket and the Hindu-Muslim conflict. Fueled by the British’s divide and rule strategy, the dispute between the two communities has been raging since before we got independence. It’s incredibly sad that no one has been able to find common ground. Although every now and then, we hear stories of love and harmony between the two communities which remind us that underneath it all, we’re all the same. Most recently, a story like that came to light from Karnataka. A Muslim family sponsored a Hindu girl’s wedding and selflessly helped her family through a financial crisis. A little humanity goes a long way.

20-year-old Kavana was on the brink of cancelling her wedding which was scheduled for 11 July. Her family was hit hard by the pandemic and were in the midst of a major financial crisis. After finding this out, a Muslim business family graciously stepped up and offered to help Kavana and her mother, Geetha. The MK family, headed by MK Razak, sponsored Kavana’s wedding to Ranjith. Reportedly, they went as far as buying her bridal jewellery and hosting the Mehendi ceremony.

Kavana’s father passed away 5 years ago due to chickenpox. To get through the pandemic, her mother, Geetha, was forced to sell their house. They moved into a small rental house. A few weeks before the wedding, a member of the MK family heard of Geetha’s plight. He visited their house and provided them with a stove and an LPG cylinder. He also bought them groceries and other essential items. Later, he discussed Kavana’s wedding dilemma with his family and they agreed to make all the arrangements through their family’s marriage fund.

This was the first time the MK family marriage fund was used for someone outside the family. Kavana and Ranjith were married as per Hindu traditions at Sri Durgaparameshwari Temple in Talapady.
