In Haryana, ‘Marriage Shops’ Help Couples Whose Families Are Against Their Wedding

Deciding to spend the rest of your life with someone is a big decision. And that decision gets even tougher when you know that your family won’t approve of it. There are numerous couples in India that are so scared to come out and reveal their relationship in front of their families because they won’t accept it. And the grounds for denial usually revolve around the difference in caste, class, gotra, etc. In India, we believe that marriage is not just between two individuals but even between their families. And so, a lot of families, especially in places like Punjab and Haryana, don’t approve of relationships, which is why either these couples run away and get married or break up.

And at times, even after their marriage a lot of these couples approach the court in order for protection from their own families to save themselves from being the next case of honor killing. Recently, there have been a few shops in Panchkula, Haryana that has taken the initiative to help such couples whose families are against their marriage.

These shops are named ‘marriage shops’ and are situated along the road leading to the Mata Mansa Devi Temple. These marriage shops take care of everything. For a sum of fee, these marriage shops arrange everything – from marriage ceremonies for couples, rented wedding attire and jewellery to photo sessions, authentic marriage certificates, and even a lawyer that will help them file a plea for protection in the court.

What is impressive about these marriage shops is that they arrange all of this within the span of two days. When speaking to a priest from one of these marriage shops, he said, “We have been solemnizing 70-80 weddings in a month,” And if that doesn’t speak volumes of the situation, I don’t know what does.

Marriage is supposed to be between two people who love each other and want to be together. But more often than not this is not the case. We need to accept love for whatever it is. We make the society and if we accept the love between two individuals then there is no one else there to question it. Love is love and that’s about it. No class, no caste, no gotra, etc. can ever be the reason for two people to not get married.
