National Cancer Awareness Day: 5 Most Common Types Of Cancer Found In Women And How To Detect Them Early

One of the deadliest diseases in the world today is cancer. It is scary to even think about it, let alone discuss it. But today, on National Cancer Awareness Day, it is time to not just talk about it but also get more aware of the disease. Knowledge can be empowering – especially in this case where you can choose to get a check-up done for the disease during one of your routine check-ups, which will in turn help you detect it early and provide you with more solutions. So, without delaying it further, below are some of the most common types of cancers found in women and how you can detect them.

The 5 most common types of cancer found in women:

1. Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers to occur in women. It occurs in the breast cells and then spreads to the lymph nodes under the arms. The symptoms include nipple changes, breast lump, swollen breast, lump in your underarm, dimpling in your breast, breast or nipple pain, nipple retraction, red, itchy, scaly or thick skin on your breast, and nipple discharge. An annual breast screening can give you an insight into the health of your breast and even help with early detection.

2. Ovarian Cancer

Another common type of cancer found in women is ovarian cancer. In this, there is an abnormal growth of cells in the ovaries and fallopian tubes that eventually form tumours. Some of the signs of ovarian cancer include vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain, bloating, feeling full quickly, menstrual changes, nausea, difficulty eating, weight loss, lower back or abdominal pain, and abnormal vaginal discharge. Detecting it early can be challenging as the symptoms can be vague and are not often intense. But regular check-ups with your gynaecologists can be helpful.

3. Cervical Cancer

As per reports, Cervical cancer has no signs or symptoms and is a result of a genetic change in the DNA of healthy cervical cells that grow and multiply at an abnormal rate. These cells then end up forming cancerous tumours. A Pap test and HPV screening can help in detecting in the early stages.

4. Skin Cancer

Skin Cancer is one of the most common cancers to occur in women. In this type of cancer, there is an abnormal growth of skin cells and it often is a result of sun exposure. Some of the symptoms include skin changes, moles getting bigger, sores that don’t heal, and crusty red spots. You can perform regular skin checks at home and if you notice any changes then consult a dermatologist right away.

5. Uterine Cancer

Cancer of the uterine lining is called uterine or endometrial cancer. It is one of the most commonly diagnosed gynecologic malignancies. Some of the symptoms of this include bleeding after menopause, spotting between periods, and bloody, foul-smelling discharge. The Pap test does not screen for this type of cancer so regular screening with your doctor is extremely important.
