National Girl Child Day: 5 Government Schemes That Encourage Girls’ Education

Today we celebrate the 15th anniversary of National Girl Child Day. An initiative that was started in 2008 by the Ministry of Women and Child Department with the aim to work towards the protection of girls in the country, striving to give them better living standards, and education and promote a healthy lifestyle for them. The government of India has taken some really noteworthy steps in this direction with the introduction of many schemes for young girls in the country.

Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana

This a very good scheme by the government that encourages the habit of saving among parents for the bright future of their girl child. Under this scheme, a couple can open a bank account under the name of their daughter in any post office or authorised bank in the country. From ₹250 to  ₹1.5 lakhs, parents can deposit the amount in the account and will only be eligible for withdrawing it for the girl’s education. Also, the account will cease to exist once the girl gets married. The clause of the scheme is crucial to teach the importance of imparting education to young girls, and not just dreaming about their marriage after they come into this world.

West Bengal Kanyashree Prakalpa

In India, girls are still looked down upon as a burden, especially for people among the low-income groups. And the main reason for this is the fact that daughters come with the responsibility of marriage. No matter how modern we get, there is still a certain section of society that thinks this way. The government of West Bengal with a motive to not let the people feel this way came up with the initiative of Kanyashree Prakalpa. Under this scheme, the government will give a one-time deposit of  ₹25,000 to the girl’s family only for the purpose of her marriage. However, the scheme does not consider girls who come from a family where the yearly income is ₹1,50,000. In fact, this scheme also supports girls’ education and encourages their interest in sports. It is a hit one by the West Bengal government.

Beti Bachao Beti Padhao

Save Daughters and Educate them, well, this initiative became very popular after it was launched by the BJP Government. Beti Bachao Beti Padhai was a voice against the illegal sex-determination system and killing of fetuses that still takes place in many parts of our country. With this scheme, the government wanted to stop such illegal practices and promote the importance of girls’ education too. Under Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, government tackles these kinds of cases.

Mukhyamantri Rajashree Yojana

It won’t be wrong to say that Rajasthan is still of those states in India that are strongly rooted in a patriarchal mindset. Where women are forced to follow the purdah rule, and young girls become victims to the orthodox set of ideas. The Mukhyamantri Rajashree Yojana was a much-needed step by the Rajasthan government to promote education and a healthy lifestyle for young girls in the state. It also focuses on the abolishment of child marriages and fetus killing. A girl’s parent can receive financial assistance from the government under the scheme during her birth, and for her education too!

Udaan Scholarship Programme

Financial problems may at times force a girl to kill her dreams of pursuing a career. Among many, the wish to become an engineer can prove to be a costly one in the country, and so many girls just don’t see such dreams. However, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) came up with its Udaan Scholarship Programme to support this dream of young girls and not let it die. This scheme aims to educate and train girls as engineers by getting them enrolled in good engineering colleges.

It is very important to make more and more families aware about these schemes so that the daughters of the country benefit from it and make a secure future for themselves.
