Gullak Season 5 Review: The Show Is A Comforting Watch With Good Performances!
hauterrfly Rating: 3 / 5

Some shows feel like a warm hug, and Gullak has always been one of them. The show has returned with season 5, and the OG cast has reprised their roles—the series stars Jameel Khan, Geetanjali Kulkarni, Harsh Mayer, Sunita Rajwar and Helly Shah. Anant Joshi has joined the cast as the primary character of Annu Mishra. The series packs some cute, fun, hearty and thought-provoking moments in these 7 crisp episodes. Some themes in the new season really hit deep and hard. Read our quick review for more.

Plot

The Mishra family is back, but this time, a few things have changed. Santosh (Jameel Khan) and Shanti Mishra (Geetanjali Kulkarni) have new battles to fight; Aman Mishra (Harsh Mayer) has found a new passion as an astrologer; and Annu Mishra struggles with professional and romantic problems. Bittu Ki Mummy has gone all feminist with her new profession as a full-time influencer, trying to work for women’s rights and anything wrong! Helly Shah as Dr Preeti, a dentist, is simply trying to prove her worth in the space. Each episode is inspired by some relevant conversation, social and consumer issues, or the much-talked-about discussion of feminism, to name a few.

Writing

Gullak continues to charm us in several ways, and the show’s writing yet again does not disappoint on most parts! Firstly, it’s always a delight to see the bond and chaos in the Mishra family. However, at the end of the day, everything ends well here. The show picks some really thought-provoking issues and blends them with comedy in perfect measures. Whether it’s the conversation around fake news spread on social media just for some attention, or the strong messaging about how feminism is never about shaming other women or putting them down, or the misinformed public believing astrology on any random app.

But these social issues are not the only thing that Gullak makes us think about. It’s also some other layers like the interpersonal relationships, the emotional turmoil of the characters and the brewing romance between Annu and Dr Preeti that make Gullak season 5 quite a wholesome watch!

Performances

All the actors have yet again poured their hearts and souls into the show, and it reflects on the screen. Jameel Khan and Geetanjali Kulkarni are flawless. The soft yet powerful moments and conversations about family, future, and kids shared between them stay with you. And that’s the power of a good performance, it’s simply natural.

Harsh Mayer as Aman Mishra is always a delight to watch. The actor shares some beautiful and relatable moments with Anant Joshi, who plays Annu Mishra, his elder brother. Their camaraderie on the screen is organic and free-flowing. In fact, Anant blends in with the cast as if he were always a part. The actor brings a quirky and pleasing nature to Annu Mishra, and it never feels too much! Helly Shah is a treat to watch! Sunita Rajwar nails the character’s arc of Bittu Ki Mummy, enjoying her time as the Nari Shakti Morcha influencer. She adds such maturity to the role but never lets go of the funny traits that the character possesses. That’s a brilliant balance!

Weak points

Gullak has been a long-running show, and it’s fair to have a lot of expectations from the new season. While it picks some very relevant social issues and topics, the impact is not delivered every time. There are a very few moments in the show that will stay with you for a long time. Unlike the other seasons, this one feels a comparitively less memorable and strong from the content POV.
