Who Was Lt. Sara Aboobacker, Kannada Writer Vocal About Muslim Women’s Issues?

A pen is mightier than a sword, and over the years, many great writers have proved this right. With their fearless words on various problematic ideologies, systems and inequalities, these writers have a special place in the literary world. But unfortunately, we lost one such great soul, who hailed from Kerala, Sara Aboobacker. An author and thinker, Sara Aboobacker was admitted to a private hospital in Mangalore and she passed away on January 10, Tuesday.

Sara Aboobacker was an author who was born and raised in Kasargod, Kerala. Her birth date is June 30, 1936. The writer was 86 years old at the time of her death and was admitted to a private hospital in Mangalore, as per the news. She primarily wrote in Kannada and was highly known for writing on the issue of Muslim women. One of the many problems that Sara Aboobacker brought to the forefront was that Muslim women are not given the freedom to speak on things that are of concern to them. In 1981, she wrote a book titled ‘Chandragiriya Theeradalli’, which dealt with the much-discussed topic of triple-talaq. One of her novels 1988 ‘Vrajagalu’ is being turned into a movie. The story of this book takes you through a journey of life, marriage and divorce in the Muslim community of Kasargod, the birthplace of Sara Aboobacker. Apart from novels, Sara Aboobakar has also written short stories like ‘Payana’, ‘Keddah’, ‘Sumayya’ and so on.  She also wrote an autobiography- ‘Hottu Kanthuva Munna’ and released it in 2010.

Sara  Aboobacker has many accolades and achievements to her name. She was honoured with the Karnataka Sahitya Akademi Award in 1984. Sara Aboobacker is also a recipient of the Daana Chintamani Attimabbe Award presented by the Government of Karnataka. The writer was presented with an Honorary Doctorate degree by Mangalore University in 2008.
