Maha Govt Sets Up Committee To Help Women In Inter-Faith Marriages Seek Counselling

The Shraddha Walker case sent shivers down the spines of people in the country. Each new horrifying detail of the case sent shockwaves across India. This case also raised questions about inter-caste and inter-faith marriages with people holding live-in relationships responsible for murders.

In the Shraddha Walker case, her parents had stopped talking to her because she was in a live-in relationship with Aftab Poonawala. This made it difficult for her to contact them when Aftab was harassing her. To tackle this issue, the Maharashtra government has set up a panel to gather information about inter-caste or inter-faith marriage couples and the woman’s maternal estranged families as well.

As per reports, this committee is called the intercaste/interfaith marriage-family coordination committee and it will be headed by Mangal Prabhat Lodha, the state Women and Child Development Minister. The main aim of this committee is to provide assistance when required to women in inter-faith marriages.

This committee will serve as a platform to resolve issues and also provide counselling. The committee will consist of 13 members from and outside the government who will take a look at the schemes and policies formulated by the central and state government on these matters. This committee will gather information about inter-caste couples by holding regular meetings with officials.

Also, the committee will keep a track of registered and unregistered inter-faith marriages and even those marriages that took place in temples or places of worship and also those who eloped to get married. Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha also asked State Women’s Commission last month to set up a team to take note of women who have gotten married without their family’s support and whose family members are estranged from them.

This comes as a good move after the Shraddha Walker case. The government trying to rebuild burnt bridges and making families understand that cutting off all communication with their daughters who married outside their faith is not right is a welcoming decision.
