ICC T20 Women’s World Cup 2023 To Have An All-Women Panel To Officiate Matches!

Cricket lovers are realising that women’s cricket matches are just as thrilling and exciting as men’s! This game which is also known as the ‘gentleman’s game’, is now going beyond the manliness of it and is being recognised on the basis of talent as well! So far, in cricket matches, we have often seen that the umpires and the referees are all men. Even in the women’s matches. But this will change in the upcoming women’s T20 World Cup tournament. A team of all-women officials be appointed to officiate the games! Yes, this is happening for the first time in the history of all ICC tournaments.

As per a report by ICC, this all-women panel of match officials will officiate the T20 women’s world cup 2023 which is set to take place in South Africa. Of these 13 members, three will be match referees and 10 will be umpires. From India, GS Lakshmi will be a match referee while N Janani and Vrinda Rathi will be umpires.

While the other two match referees are Shandre Fritz from South Africa and Michell Pereira from Sri Lanka. The umpires team will include Eloise Sheridan and Claire Polosak from Australia, Sue Redfern and Anna Harris from England, Kim Cotton from New Zealand, Lauren Agenbag from South Africa, Nimali Perera from Sri Lanka, and Jacqueline Williams from West Indies.

The ICC Women’s cricket manager, Snehal Pradhan, shared why having a panel was important. She said that when young girls and women will see this, they will believe that they can be one of the panellists, too. She also mentioned that this shows them there is an alternative to getting to the top of the game despite not being a player.

The ICC General Manager, Wasim Khan, talked about this remarkable move and said that with the growing popularity of women’s cricket, they (ICC) have been ‘building pathways’ to make sure that more women get the opportunity to officiate matches. He also shared that this announcement is the start of a journey where women and men can enjoy equal opportunities in cricket.
