We were still reeling from the horrors of the Shraddha Walkar murder case, and now the Delhi acid attack case has again sent shockwaves in the country. The details of the case are terrifying. It reflects the hopeless condition that our country is facing in terms of crimes against women. The Delhi case has yet again given rise to conversations around acid attack crimes and the country is enraged at the whole incident. 

Who Was The Victim?

The victim of the Delhi acid attack was a 17-year-old girl who was a resident of west Delhi. The incident took place when she left home for school. She was attacked by two masked men on a bike, minutes after she left home.

Why Was The Girl Attacked?

The 17-year-old schoolgirl was friends with the main accused Sachin Arora. There are reports suggesting, the girl dated him, but three months back, around September, they broke up. Sachin Arora planned the crime just to take revenge for the rejection. 

How Was She Attacked?

On December 14, Wednesday, the culprit accompanied by a friend, targeted the girl when she walking to her school along with her younger sister. The interrogation revealed that the acid was bought from an e-commerce website, Flipkart.

Accused Culprits

The police have arrested three men in the case. One of the prime accused in the Delhi acid attack case is 20-year-old Sachin Arora, who was the victim’s friend. The other accused who was on the bike with Sachin Arora was a boy identified as Harshit Aggarwal. The police also found the involvement of the victim’s neighbour and friend, identified as Virender Singh. The neighbour reportedly helped the main accused to misguide the police about his whereabouts. Around the time of the crime, Virender Singh took Sachin Arora’s bike and phone to another location. 

Statement Released By Victim’s Family 

The 17-year-old girl’s father regretted not dropping his daughter at school. While speaking to the media, they also shared that their daughter could not see the culprits because she was blinded by the acid. They also told that some shopkeepers around that area rushed to help the girl, and gave her some milk to wash off the acid. As per news, the girl’s father said that his daughter had never complained about being harassed in the past. The girl was shouting in pain and could not say anything to the family, it was the younger daughter who narrated the ordeal.

Victim’s Health Status

The Delhi acid attack victim is currently being treated at the Safdarjung hospital. The doctors gave an update on her health and said that she suffered 8 percent burns. She suffered facial burns, scars around her neck, and eye injuries too. The doctors informed the media that she is stable and currently under observation. 

Chemical Traders

Many of the traders who deal in chemical products have come forth the keep their opinions on the matter. They have said that strict protocols are being followed when it comes to selling acid, and in Delhi, the over-the-counter sale of acid is anyways banned. Strong chemicals like sulphuric acid and nitric acid are only sold for industrial purposes, that too with proper license. The chemical traders, however, have asked the authorities to come up with stronger ways to monitor the people purchasing acid, as per the news.

What Did The Delhi Commission For Women Say?

The chief of the Delhi Commission For Women, Swati Maliwal issued an official statement on the Delhi case. Condemning the crime, Swati Maliwal said that acid is sold like vegetables in the city, and anybody can buy it. She highlighted that the DCW has repeatedly given suggestions to curb acid attack crimes, yet nothing concrete is being done about it.
