Why Is Anal Sex Still A Taboo? How Do We De-Stigmatise It?

In this supposedly modern society, what we lack is modern thinking and open-mindedness. We have shunned so many things which used to be common in ancient and medieval society, one of these things is anal sex. Anal sex is not the “conventional” way of having sex. It is when you penetrate the anus of any person. This however is not breaking news. Many of us already know about it, some of us might even have it as a fantasy. But, we still seem to hide out interests in anal sex. I gotta wonder why that is.

Interestingly the number of people who have anal sex at least once in their lifetime is increasing. But why is this? Maybe it was the thrill of trying something forbidden that has led to this increase. But it surely must be painful, right? And what does it tell us about the people who enjoy it?

What Led To This Massive Layer Of Taboo?

For the longest time anal sex has been considered taboo, something forbidden and dirty (literally). One of the main reasons for this was homophobic tendencies because it is the usual way of sex performed by gays, so to shun them and their lifestyle on another platform was to forbid anal sex. Due to this, the only form of sex that became ‘acceptable’ was the penetration of the vagina and that too, between a married couple for reproduction. Other than this anything else was dirty. You see, the purpose of sex is not pleasure but reproduction.

Another most commonly known reason is faecal fears. Anal sex is the penetration of the anus from where the poop is excreted. Having sex with the anus was equated to penetrating a pile of poop. People used to get grossed out thinking about it and judged people who enjoyed anal sex. This created a problem for those who had touched the realm of the unknown because it was pleasurable to both the penetrator and the one who was penetrated. They could easily be harshly judged as unhygienic and filthy. Sounds mean, huh?

The third reason was the shame and degradation attached to it. Anal sex was a common practice among prostitutes to avoid getting pregnant. Women who enjoyed anal sex could easily be put in the same category as a prostitute. Another idea behind this was that only a promiscuous person would be able to bear the pain of anal sex because they firstly enjoy having a lot of sex and secondly that they get used to the pain. I mean, this is beyond just absurd and we were all secretly hoping they would change with time but alas, here we stand.

So, How Can We Remove This Taboo?

The perfect way to remove the taboo around anything is to talk about it. Making people aware of the misconceptions and myths about anal sex will help open up their eyes. The ironic fact that most of these idiots don’t even know is that anal sex can be as pleasurable as vaginal sex and in fact, even more, if performed properly. Therefore if more people want to try it, they should be able to do it without any shame. I personally love anal sex and I don’t see why shame has to be attached to it.

Even though heterosexual couples can enjoy anal sex, it shouldn’t become a question of the sexuality of the man or the character of the woman. If a couple is undertaking pegging, which is another type of anal sex. That doesn’t change any of their sexualities, because sexual orientation is not related to any sexual activity.

Furthermore, anal sex is not necessarily dirty and messy. The poop inside us is not stored in the anal canal, it is usually clean. People to further avoid the risk can poop one or two hours before having anal sex. Therefore it is not a freaky fetish involving poop. Finally, women who enjoy anal sex and do not have to go through the pain are not because they do it a lot, but because they do it right. If done properly anal sex is not very painful but more pleasurable since our anal canal is very nerve dense.

In the end, sex is a very intimate and personal activity. Don’t let society fool you into thinking it’s dirty and shameful. Our body is a wondrous place and it’s no crime if you want to explore it any way you wish to. Let your inner freak go wild while being safe, of course. Use safe words, go slow and be patient. Experiment away!
