UP And Kerala Start Promising Initiatives To Vaccinate Pregnant Women

It’s undeniable that without the COVID vaccine we have little to no chance of surviving through this pandemic. And even though the sceptics are trying to convince everyone that the vaccine is ineffective, harmful even, that’s just not true. Every single person needs to get jabbed if we want to be free of the coronavirus. And it’s especially important that pregnant women are inoculated because they are at a higher risk than the rest of us. Even though the government has finally made the COVID vaccine available to pregnant women, there is still so much apprehension. A few states are now putting initiatives in place to motivate pregnant women to get vaccinated. This is the need of the hour.

Most recently, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath asked his officials who are responsible for vaccinations to make getting jabbed more convenient for pregnant women. He said that the vaccination booths that are only meant for women should be more publicized so that all pregnant women are aware of them so they can easily find ways to vaccinate.

At a high-level Covid-19 review meeting on Monday, Yogi Adityanath said, “The Covid vaccination system should be made convenient for pregnant women. Contact the pregnant women or their family members for vaccination. The women special vaccination booths in each district should be publicised well so that people are aware of them.”

While it’s great that Yogi Adityanath has realised the problem and is addressing it, it’s not enough. Effective action needs to be taken. For instance, Kerala Health Minister Veena George has just launched an initiative titled ‘Mathrukavacham’ that will vaccinate all the pregnant women in the state. Now, this sounds promising.

Under this campaign, the pregnant women who can register themselves will be encouraged to do so and the ones who don’t have access to computers or a smartphone will be aided by ASHA workers. In each locality, the health workers will keep a tab on how many pregnant women have been vaccinated. Under this campaign, there will also be special vaccination camps will be scheduled on specific days for the pregnant women in each district. This is to ensure that pregnant women do not come in contact with anyone else at the vaccination centre.

Campaigns like this one to vaccinate pregnant women need to be started in every state across the country. It’s more important to take action than to simply talk about taking action. Vaccinating pregnant women needs to be a topmost priority at the moment.
