Union Health Ministry Announces Fresh Guidelines To Administer COVID 19 Vaccine To Pregnant Women

At this very moment, while the entire world is recovering from the pandemic, India has been backed into a corner. Our case numbers are on a considerable descent, yes, but there are already talks of a third wave that’s supposed to be deadlier. We are facing a never-ending crisis and the dearth of sufficient infrastructure, life-saving equipment and vaccines are not helping. Speaking of vaccines, for a long time, doctors have been going hoarse trying to convey to the government that it is safe for pregnant women to get inoculated. Finally, the Union Health Ministry has announced that pregnancy does not increase the risk of COVID 19. Expectant mothers can now get vaccinated as well, without worrying about how it will affect their child.

It seems like the Union Health Ministry has finally heard the prayers of all the doctors and pregnant women. They’ve announced that pregnancy does not increase the risk of contracting COVID 19 and hence, it’s safe for expectant mothers to get vaccinated. They’ve suggested that all pregnant women must register themselves on the CoWin website (because that works so well) or get themselves registered on-site at a vaccination centre. This is good news!

The health ministry said in a statement on Monday, “Most pregnant women will be asymptomatic or have a mild disease, but their health may deteriorate rapidly and that might affect the foetus too. It is important that they take all precautions to protect themselves from acquiring Covid-19, including taking vaccination against Covid-19. It is therefore advised that a pregnant woman should take Covid-19 vaccines.”

The Ministry said that like any medicine, the vaccine may cause a few common side effects. The woman getting inoculated may get a mild fever, pain at the injection site or feel unwell for 1-3 days. In its statement, the Ministry further added, “Symptomatic pregnant women appear to be at an increased risk of severe disease and death. In case of severe disease, like all other patients, pregnant women shall also need hospitalization. Pregnant women with underlying medical conditions e.g, high blood pressure, obesity, age over 35 years are at a higher risk of severe illness due to Covid-19.”

There are a lot of myths floating about when it comes to pregnant women getting vaccinated. This memo released by the Union Ministry of Health should clear it all up. Hopefully, it won’t be long before every Indian citizen is vaccinated. At least that way, we can be free of this pandemic once and for all.
