This Policewoman, Known As Mumbai’s Mother Teresa, Adopted 50 Tribal Students Amid The Pandemic

It’s no secret that people in India are divided based on a lot of things. Politics, religion and even cricket. But after two deadly waves of Coronavirus, it’s become increasingly clear that we need to look beyond all this and just help as many people as we can. Holding on to this sense of community is the only way we will be able to survive the storm. Every day, amid stories of death and despair, there are tales of people who put their own safety at risk to aid others. And today, we are talking about a policewoman who has done just that.

Known as Mumbai’s Mother Teresa, policewoman Rahena Sheikh Bagwan reportedly adopted 50 tribal children in Maharashtra’s Raigad district. If this isn’t enough, she has always been ready to help the underprivileged and the ailing whenever they really needed it. Rahena has been honoured by police commissioner Hemant Nagrale for her exemplary work and selflessness.

Rahena first met the children that she adopted on her biological daughter’s birthday last year. She learned about the school Dnyani Vidyalaya in Raigad’s Waje Taluka and spoke to the principal who invited the policewoman to visit the school. On her visit, she saw that most of these children were from underprivileged backgrounds and some of them didn’t even have appropriate footwear. Hence, she used all the money that she’d saved for her daughter’s birthday and their Eid shopping to help these children. The policewoman said, “It gives me immense pleasure and satisfaction that I can help someone. I want to see each one of them as successful citizens. Education is the key to change.”

Her selfless acts do not end here. During the peak of the second wave, Rahena helped numerous colleagues of hers to get the blood and plasma they needed. She saved countless lives by arranging for Remdisvir injections, hospital beds and oxygen cylinders. She said, “Serving the needy is something more than just preaching. We have to do it in reality.” Further adding, “We cannot see people going to bed without food and children without education in the 21st century. We should help without any expectation.”

We need more policewomenn like Rahena. What she did for those children and for everyone else is so wholesome. We can only hope that more people are inspired to help the needy after reading this policewoman ‘s story.
