This 19-Year-Old Girl Is All Set To Become The World’s Youngest Woman To Fly Solo Around The World

Despite reading about violent crimes every day, I always say that right now is a great time to be a woman. We’ve never been more independent or empowered than we are today. We’re breaking free from stereotypes and from the confines of our houses and stepping out to make a name for ourselves. Today, women are helming industries, saving lives and making history. All at once. It’s a wonderful thing to witness. We say all this after hearing about the 19-year-old girl who is set to become the youngest woman to fly solo across the world. What a feat!

19-year-old Belgian-British student Zara Rutherford is all set to become the world’s youngest woman to fly solo around the globe. On 11 August she will set off on a 51,000 km voyage in her custom Shark ultralight plane. This is the world’s fastest microlight plane. Zara Rutherford is a role model for girls everywhere.

After she completes her journey, Zara will become the world’s youngest woman to a microlight around the world. The route she’ll take will cover the Atlantic, crossing over Greenland, Canada, and South America, before reaching Alaska and then crossing to Russia and Indonesia. She will start from her home city Brussels and return to Europe in 3 months. Talking to the media, Zara said, “The greatest challenge will be the remote places like northern Russia or Greenland – there aren’t many people who live there so if anything were to go wrong I would be in a bit of an awkward situation. I’ve got a bit of nerves and excitement, sometimes both.”

Zara comes from a family of pilots. She began her formal training at the tender age of 14 but only got her pilot license when she turned 18. She told reporters that while her father was completely supportive of her decision to embark on this adventure, her mother took some convincing. She also said that she wants to inspire girls in STEM. Talking about her aim, Zara said, “There is a difference in aviation between men and women. So my goal is to bring the records closer and then hopefully inspire other girls to try and beat my record and then go and start competing with the boys.”

Currently, the record for youngest woman to fly solo around the world is held by Shaesta Waiz. She completed the journey at the age of 30 in 2017. We hope that Zara is successful in achieving this impressive feat. She is truly an inspiration. More power to her!
