Supreme Court Judge Justice BV Nagarathna Says Maternity Shouldn’t Be A Barrier In Women’s Career. Preach!

It’s difficult to understand that even though we live in a ‘modern world’, women still face, judgements, and stereotypes, and don’t get equal opportunities as men. And if they are married with kids, they have to leave their jobs because taking care of the child is a mother’s duty, right? And even if they continue their work, they are not treated equally. Recently, Supreme Court Judge Justice BV Nagarathna said that maternity should not be a barrier in women’s careers and talked about the importance of childcare facilities at the workplace. We couldn’t agree more with her, to be honest!

On Friday, Justice BV Nagarathna attended the inauguration of a crèche facility at the Delhi High Court as the guest of honour and she rightfully said that maternity shouldn’t become a barrier in women’s careers. She also mentioned that providing access to quality childcare at the workplace will help in ensuring that motherhood does not become an obstacle to women’s empowerment. She stated, “I have firmly believed that maternity should not be a barrier for the careers of women to plateau or dip. Motherhood must not result in a situation where women are passed over for promotions and hiring. It is in that context that I say that providing access to quality childcare at the workplace would play a significant role in ensuring that motherhood does not become an insurmountable barrier to women’s empowerment.”

The Supreme Court Judge mentioned that any country, community, or economy is unable to achieve its full potential without the equal participation of women. She added that reliable, affordable, and good quality childcare facility is important to encourage more mothers to take up jobs.

Justice BV Nagarathna also mentioned the ‘disappointing trend’ where women are quitting their jobs and one of the main reasons is the lack of childcare facilities after they become mothers.

I know a lot of educated men think that we don’t need feminism anymore. They don’t understand the fact that women face discrimination at work just because they are mothers. Also, they don’t get enough credits for their hard work even though they deserve it. Hopefully, the government and our system will provide some solution to this problem of working mothers.
