Freedom Fighter And Padma Awardee Shakuntala Choudhary Passes Away At 102, PM Modi And Other Leaders Condole Her Demise

Freedom fighter and social worker Shakuntala Choudhary breathed her last on Monday. The 102-year-old Gandhian social worker was popularly known as Shakuntala Baideo. She hailed from Kamrup in Assam and worked for the betterment of the people in the village, especially the women and children. Shakuntala Choudhary was named a recipient of the highest civilian awards of Padma Shri award by the Government of India. The social worker and freedom fighter worked at the Sarania Ashram located in Guwahati in Assam.

The death of the freedom fighter was mourned by several public figures on Twitter. Taking to Twitter, Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the demise of Shakuntala Choudhary. Remembering the freedom fighter and ‘her lifelong efforts to promote Gandhian values, PM Modi said, “Her noble work at the Sarania Ashram positively impacted many lives. Saddened by her passing away. My thoughts are with her family and countless admirers.”

Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma also condoled the death of the freedom fighter. “Deeply anguished at the passing away of veteran Gandhian and Padma Shri Shakuntala Choudhary. Her life was devoted to selfless service, truth, simplicity and non-violence at Sarania Ashram, Guwahati where Mahatma Gandhi had stayed in 1946. My prayers for her sadgati Om Shanti!,” read his tweet.
