One More: An Exam Proctor In Bangalore University Calls Student ‘Baby’ And The Internet Is Not Having This

If you’ve been paying close attention to the news these days, on things other than the coronavirus, then you know that in recent months there have been numerous cases filed against teachers for sexually assaulting students. Especially in schools and colleges in our country. It’s true what they say, women aren’t completely safe anywhere. Now, the reason we’re talking about teachers misbehaving with students again is that it has happened once more at Christ University, Bangalore. This time, during an online exam. This kind of behaviour makes me sick.

In this recent incident, during an online examination, a student of Christ University asked her proctor if she could end her exam as she has submitted her answers. In response, the proctor asks her to wait for 3 minutes and also addresses her as ‘baby’. Creepy, right?

The screenshots of this chat are circulating online after they were posted by the National Students Union of India (NSUI), Karnataka. In their post, the NSUI wrote, “This happened to a student who appeared in today’s online examination conducted by @christ_university_official. She asked if she could end as she was done and the proctor replied “three more minutes baby”. Students claim that this has happened before also but no action was taken. Also, the proctor asks the girls to bend the camera. This isn’t right and should not happen to anyone.”

In their post, they also mentioned that despite the fact that a lot of students have complained of improper behaviour, no action was taken. In fact, when this girl, who was addressed as ‘baby’, went to her teachers to complain they told her that it was just a “caring approach” and that there was nothing wrong with it. They also told her that the lecherous proctor must be a senior person and that she should just take it “in the right spirit”. Whatever that means. How do these teachers not see that the proctor was extremely inappropriate? And so what if he is a senior person? What kind of an inane argument is that? If the teachers are so indifferent, it’s no wonder that sexual misconduct in schools and colleges have become so frequent.

These screenshots have sparked major outrage on social media. A few students are sharing their own traumatic experiences while others are simply condemning the incident. Take a look at a few reactions:

Why aren’t schools and colleges taking stricter steps for the safety of their students? Online harassment is a rapidly growing issue. It’s a shame that schools and colleges aren’t taking adequate steps to curb it.
