On International Yoga Day, Expert Sheds Light On This Year’s Theme ‘Yoga For Humanity’
Today, as the world observes International Yoga Day, we celebrate the ancient practice of yoga, which helps to balance both body and mind. Yoga has enjoyed an important spot in India’s cultural history, for years now. And celebrating the power of this practice, the theme of this year is ‘Yoga for Humanity.’ With multiple other factors that help in strengthening an individual’s mental and physical well-being, yoga sheds light on the values of mindfulness, perseverance, moderation, and discipline.
International Yoga Day 2022 Theme
The theme for International Yoga Day 2022 is ‘Yoga for Humanity.’ And to observe that, the ministry has curated special programmes for the transgender community, specially-abled, children, women and senior citizens. Shedding light on the theme, Dr Mickey Mehta, a pioneer in holistic health and a fitness guru, says “yoga is for the evolution of mankind and yoga is here to solve every problem of mankind.”
Talking about the significance of the year’s theme, he adds, “Yoga is for individual health, wellness, immunity, and prevention of diseases. Yoga for mental and emotional release and soundness, healing of your mind and your emotions. And when this happens, an individual learns to give, forgive, share, and he/she becomes patient, tolerant, so it adds to humanity. So yoga is for humanity, and prosperity because loving, caring, and sharing are what yoga teaches.”
Explaining the importance of yoga and its various benefits, Dr Mehta says, “Peace, bliss, ananda, karuna, vismay, vairagya is what yoga teaches and promotes the building of personalities and shaping of characters. That’s how if all humans practice yoga, it will help evolve humanity to go to a very different level. There will be peace and there will be prosperity everywhere.”

And often, while commencing this journey to mindfulness, many find themselves stuck with a thousand questions like, ‘what should we begin with?’ From asanas that are suitable for a beginner and their body type, one must carefully lay down a guide to practice. And most importantly knowing which type of yoga practice fits your body type to churn out results, promising success and positive outcomes. Dr Mickey Mehta’s easy guide of asanas for beginners includes– “Tadasana, Paschimottasana, Parvatasana, Pavanmuktasana, Bhujangasana” which offer a relaxed way to start out with your first few sessions.
While everybody requires some special assistance in terms of the yoga asanas that fits their body types, Dr Mehta says, “Yoga has to be practised for all body types because yoga is universal, yes but the intensity, the range of motion has to be calibrated by the yoga coach.” Some other studies also talk about combinations like Iyengar yoga for curvy body shapes, and Yin yoga for athletic body types, to attain better results.
