Indian-Origin Student Was One Of Those Killed In the Travis Scott’s Astroworld Concert Tragedy

I remember one of my first concerts ever was a Coldplay concert. Man, what a night it was. I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed as much as I enjoyed that night. Having said that, when I first entered the venue where the concert was being held, I really didn’t think that I was going to enjoy being here. Why? Because of the crowd! I mean, to start off with, I’m claustrophobic and there were easily thousands of people there, it easily could have gone south. But I was glad it didn’t. But the same can’t be said about Travis Scott’s concert that took place on Friday night. Well, if you have seen the recent news, a stampede broke out during Scott’s Astroworld Festival and it resulted in nine people dying. One of them was an Indian-origin student who was just 22 years old.

A 22-year-old Indian-origin student named Bharati Shahani succumbed to the injuries she suffered during Travis Scott’s Astroworld Festival and died of severe brain injury. Bharati was about to graduate from Texas A&M University in the spring. Bharati died on Wednesday after being on the ventilator for some time. According to reports, it was Bharati’s first-ever concert and it was then that the stampede broke out killing 9 people between the ages of 14 and 27.

Bharati’s mother Karishma said that Bharati was a really good student and would have graduated with a computer science degree in the spring. Her mother also said that she helped out with their family business and took care of her sisters. Bharati had gone to the Travis Scott concert with her sister Namrata and a cousin. They all were holding hands and enjoying the concert when the stampede took place. And during the crowd surge, they all got separated.

One of her family members, James Lassiter said, “It was like a sinkhole. People were falling on top of each other. There were … layers of bodies on the ground, like two people thick. We were fighting to come up to the top and (to) breathe (and) stay alive.” She was a sister, a daughter, a high-achieving college student about to graduate from Texas A&M University with high, high grades.”

Not going to lie, concerts are fun. But just like everything else, there has to be a limit to how many people should be allowed in a venue. Just like Bharati Shahani another student, daughter, sister, mother, etc. can lose their lives due to negligence. Maintaining precautions in festivals and concerts such as Travis Scott’s is of utmost importance.
