They Met On Facebook, Fell In Love And Then The Indian Man Crossed Borders To Marry His Bangladeshi Wife

I’m definitely not a believer in love, but I’ve seen my fair share of people who fawn over each other and it makes me want to throw up a little. Fine, I am a cynic. What amazes me the most is when I see people crossing boundaries and borders for being with the person they love. Despite all the odds, these lovers fight and rebel against societal norms to be with each other. And the feeling of finally being one, nothing matches that, apparently.

Recently, the Border Security Force (BSF) arrested a couple for illegally crossing the international borders. The man was an Indian national whereas the woman was a Bangladeshi. The two of them met over Facebook and fell in love with each other.

The man who goes by the name of Jaikanto Chandra Rai is a 24-year-old from Ballavpur village in Nadia district and the 18-year-old woman he married is from Nerail, Bangladesh. It was on 26th June, when the 82 Battalion’s troops were posted on duty at the Madhupur border. And it was the same day when security personnel saw the couple along the border road and asked them for identification.

The man identified himself as an Indian but when the woman did not reveal her identity, the personnel took them in for questioning on the basis of suspicion. On questioning, Rai revealed how they both had met on Facebook and fell in love with her. To be united with her, he left for Bangladesh on 8th March 2021 with the help of a man named Appu, who was a broker in Taraknagar.

After spending time with her, they both got married on March 10th and stayed in Bangladesh till 25th June. According to the woman’s statement, she was leaving Bangladesh to go to India to stay with her husband. And to do so, they paid 10,000 Bangladeshi Taka to a man named Raju Mandal, who was a Bangladeshi tout, who had promised to help them cross the border.

After their statements were recorded, they were taken to the Bhimpur police station for further questioning. The commanding officer of the 82 Battalion, Sanjay Prasad Singh, spoke about the incident and confirmed that the Indian man had crossed the borders to marry a Bangladeshi girl. He also added that their relationship seemed genuine and real.

With regards to the questioning, he shed light on the matter of human trafficking that was prevalent in that region, and due to that, the officers are more strict firm when it comes to trespassers.

When it comes to love, this is definitely not the first case I’ve seen where lovers have crossed borders. And I’m definitely sure that this is not the last we’re going to hear of it either. But what is interesting about the case is that despite knowing the trouble the couple could get in, they still chose to take the risk and go ahead with their marriage. Love without borders, truly.
