Delhi HC Adjourns Akbar’s Appeal Against Ramani Acquittal, Says “There Are Far More Important Matters”

Power is good. Great even, some might say. Especially when it is being used for the greater good of the people. But when does that really happen? Almost every one who ascends into power doesn’t do it without getting seduced by what all it can do. Be it politicians, businessmen, or even individuals in relationships as they realise their place and power in the social construct. Making things run in their favor with one swish of a hand, there have been quite a few cases wherein people in power have tried to get out of situations that didn’t move in their favor. Much like former Union minister and journalist M.J. Akbar.

Back in 2018, after being accused of several accounts of sexual harassment, M.J Akbar, resigned from the Union Council of Ministers and filed a defamation case against the journalist Priya Ramani.

The case for which Ramani had been summoned by the Patiala House Court in January, granted bail to Ramani in February on a personal bond of Rs 10,000. As the case proceeded, Ramani told the Delhi court in September 2020 that she deserved to be acquitted while submitting arguments through her lawyer that further proved her allegations against M.J Akbar. Although that didn’t stop M.J Akbar from going after her.

Ramani who was acquitted in February, felt she had vindicated on behest of all the women that he was accused to have wronged. However, Akbar filed another appeal with the Delhi High Court, moving against the order acquitting Ramani. But what the Delhi High Court had to say in return, was what put our faith back into the system.

Saying there were “far more important matters”, the Delhi High Court on Wednesday adjourned the appeal filed by former Union minister M J Akbar. Justice Mukta Gupta adjourned the case till August 11 and said, “This is not special category matter. There are far more important matters… There is no urgency.”

Here is hoping, her words were enough to school the man of what and more precisely who matters more here.
