Be Alert: Men Are Scamming Women On Matrimonial Apps, Asking Them To Pay Huge Sums For Gifts Or To Meet Them

When it comes to finding an arranged match, things may not always be as they seem. There are several fake profiles and people just looking to have some fun. There are people looking for one night stands …on matrimonial apps! So until you know someone well and have met them, their family, I wouldn’t advise you to trust them. Sometimes, trusting a person may not just cause you disappointment in the heart affairs but also break your bank accounts, as it did to this woman. A 41-year-old woman who was looking for a match on a matrimonial app found a fraudster instead of duped her of a whopping ₹1.9 lakh.

The guy who had signed up using a fake name, Aditya Ganesh, claimed he was from the UK. The two spoke a lot, connected well and decided to meet when he was coming to India.

He then pretended to having arrived at Mumbai airport and been asked by the Customs officers to pay up a huge sum. He said that since he was carrying excess amount of foreign currency, they levied a fine on him. The fraudster asked her to wire the money directly to the Customs Officer and so she did. He promised he’d return it once he is able to get out of the airport.

However, she realised she had been duped when both guy’s and the officer’s numbers were switched off. This is when she approached the Andheri police and filed a complaint against the man who had created a fake profile and duped her of ₹1.9 lakh.

The accused men have been booked for cheating and impersonation. The police has also contacted the bank to freeze her account so the amount can be retrieved. The men have not been nabbed yet but the probe is on.

There are several frauds out there and we must not trust someone easy. She wired such a huge sum to a man she had not even met. However, we don’t know what kind of interactions they had and if she thought they were in “love”. But still, when it comes to trusting someone so random, I’d say take your time. Getting duped – for sex or for money – is very much possible.
