Woman Raped And Duped Of Rs. 5.19 Crores By Partner Under The Pretext Of Marriage

Each day, as I sit on my desk, penning down my two cents on what’s happening around me, I get overwhelmed by how widely prevalent intimate partner abuse is. We enter a relationship with so many hopes and dreams – and we do so only after we feel safe with someone. And then there we are, getting violated by the very person who made us feel like we’re home. It is deeply disturbing that as a woman, the world is making it difficult to trust your own partner. In fact, you could be getting scammed and blackmailed by on the pretext of marriage.

Recently, Mumbai police nabbed a 38-year-old man after a woman accused him of rape, and scam worth Rs. 5.19 crores as well as blackmailing her using objectionable content. A case of “rape, voyeurism, criminal breach of trust, cheating and criminal intimidation” as reported by Indian Express has been registered against him.

The woman said she had met the accused through a common friend three years ago in 2018. They exchanged numbers and started talking more often – just how people start dating. Seems ordinary, doesn’t it? Like it can happen to any of us. We meet someone through a known person, get to know them better, fall in love and hope to marry someday. Sounds like such a fairytale except when he dupes you of many and starts blackmailing you with your nudes.

An officer revealed the accused told the woman that he wanted to start a new business to secure their future since marriage was on cards. He took Rs 3.69 crore in cash and valuables worth Rs 1.5 crore from her. When they broke up in 2019, he refused to return the money and also demanded more money from her.

When the woman refused he threatened to release her nudes — that he had taken when they were in a relationship — on social media. That’s when she got scared and filed a report against him.

“We are trying to recover the money and valuables that the accused had taken from her. Searches are being carried at the house of the accused,” Indian Express quoted an officer.

Recently, another woman was raped and force-fed urine by her live-in partner after she decided to leave him. Another woman was raped and forced to change her religion for marriage by her live-in partner. In both these cases, the women were being blackmailed by men using their nudes.

Intimate partner abuse is more common than we think and it is possible that this is now coming to light because women are braving up and reporting the crimes, even though they were blackmailed.
