Sikkim CM Announces Incentives For Women To Produce More Children. Overpopulation Ka Kya?
Maybe providing incentives is not enough. As we all know, everything has its own carrying capacity. If you are confused, I’m talking about our planet here and how the human population has become larger than the carrying capacity of its environment. Don’t worry, the Earth will not fall down in space from overpopulation. Still, it will affect human beings because the resources will be limited and it will literally become the ‘survival of the fittest’. And as we are discussing serious topics like overpopulation and overabundance, the Chief Minister of Sikkim has announced various incentives for women and people belonging to the indigenous communities to encourage them to produce more than one child.
On Sunday, the Chief Minister of Sikkim – Prem Singh Tamang expressed concern over Sikkim’s population and said that the population of indigenous communities has dwindled and the fertility rate of the state in recent times has reportedly registered the lowest growth rate at just one child per woman. Tamang said that they need to arrest the declining fertility rate by incentivising local people, including women, so they can produce more children. He said that the government has already provided maternity leave of 365 days to women in service and 30 days of paternity leave to male employees to encourage them to raise babies.

He said that the state government has proposed to give one increment to the female employees for giving birth to a second child and two increments for producing a third one.
Furthermore, he added that the general people will also be eligible for financial assistance for producing multiple children.
Prem Singh Tamang also slammed Pawan Kumar Chamling’s government for coercing the people to raise small families with only one child. He said that his government wants to urge and incentivise local people of Sikkim to raise bigger families with three children in order to arrest the declining population of the state.
For the unversed, the estimated population of Sikkim is currently under seven lakhs of which around 80% belong to the indigenous communities.
