Pronouns “She” And “Her” Used For The First Time In India To Refer To All Genders In The Data Protection Bill. Hope This Is Just The Beginning

Our country is patriarchal and male-dominated in every sector. It has never been very inclusive, but slowly that is evolving with time. The ways in which the administration and government of India operate are also undergoing numerous, never-before-seen changes. Like the one, we recently witnessed, when the draft of the Digital Data Protection Bill 2022 was released and for the very first time, the pronouns used in the bill for all genders were “She” and “Her”, instead of “He” and “Him”.

Ashwini Vaishnaw, the communication minister took to his social media handle to share a draft of the Digital Personal Data Protection Bill 2022. The motive was to seek the public’s feedback on the bill after making all the changes that were suggested by the joint parliamentary committee in August this year.

The bill focuses largely on the need to respect the individual’s right to privacy protection and the requirement that personal data only be processed for legitimate purposes. He also highlighted that the “She” and “Her” was used to refer to all genders keeping in mind the initiative to promote women’s empowerment in the country, as per the news.

The initiative is appreciated. The use of “She” and “Her” pronouns for all gender was done for the first time by the country’s legislative department. Although we can say that this inclusivity has come very late, considering that the system was quite ignorant to recognise half of its population for a long time now. However, it was refreshing to see that the legislative system strives to bring in the change now and we hope to see more such empowering changes in the future too!
