All Kerala Universities To Have Menstrual Leave For Female Students: R.Bindu

Period pains are unbearable and this is no exaggeration. We generally don’t have official menstrual leaves in schools or offices for women. However, looks like things are gradually changing for the better. In a very commendable move, the Higher Education Minister of Kerala announced on Monday that female students in all universities in the state will be given menstrual leaves. This decision has been made after taking into consideration and acknowledging the discomfort and pain women go through during menstruation.

On January 16, 2023, Monday, Kerala’s Higher Education Minister, R. Bindu made an official announcement that the government had decided to implement menstrual leave in all state universities for female students. This initiative was first taken by the Cochin University Of Science and Technology, and it is a good thing that the government is trying to bring it to every institute. R. Bindu, in the long post on her official Facebook account first went on to acknowledge the physical and mental pain that women go through during menstruation. Keeping this in mind, the government decided to take the aforementioned step. She also talked highly about the student union at Cochin University who came out with this initiative in the direction of women’s empowerment.

This move is a really necessary one. Many countries like Japan, South Korea and the very recent one Spain, all have paid menstrual leaves included in their corporate structure. A PIL for Menstrual Leaves was also filed in the Supreme Court and many such arguments were kept forth. Periods can be a mentally and physically challenging phase for women, and for some it really is extreme. Kerala is certainly setting a great example with such a move by considering the pain women have to go through every month. Will more states follow?
