Spain To Announce Three Days Of Menstrual Leave Each Month For Working Women. Can Other Governments Take Cues?

A woman, let her be in any part of the world, shoulders the already existing responsibilities and duties in her day-to-day life even if she is on her period. She has no respite from the cramps, mood swings and other distress she experiences for those five days or even longer as the cycle length varies for some. It is a well-known fact that the pain a woman feels when she is on her period is unbearable and also the cause of severe discomfort as well. As ideally as it should be expected, a menstruating woman should be given leave by the organisation she works for to rest during this time but, unfortunately, this policy is not implemented in the majority of countries across the globe. But it is great news for those women living in Spain as they will now be given three days of menstrual leave every month!

As per reports, these new health measures are underway in Spain and will be approved by next week. By implementing these measures, Spain will become the first western country to grant menstrual leave to women who experience period pain when they are at work. Not just this, but the cabinet will issue guidelines to schools to provide sanitary pads to girls who need them.

Menstrual hygiene products like pads and tampons will also have VAT deducted from their price and even will be sold for free to those women who cannot afford them. This is a making people huge step in the direction of making people aware of menstruation and menstrual hygiene.

The Secretary of State for Equality and against Gender Violence, Angela Rodriguez told El Periodico that the rights of a woman related to menstrual health are never discussed. She also added that one in four women does not have access to period hygiene products either.

Chalo, I am happy for the women in Spain who can actually relax on their period. I don’t know when India will implement such health measures.
