After Multiple Protests And A Decade Long Debate, Meta Will Soon Free The Nipple

Even in the era of social media, society is finding its way to distance women from actively practising their rights. And as feminism and fashion join each other to change the world, they also aim to script history and build a better future. Amongst many ideologies that have not aligned with society and today the world of the internet, free the nipple is one movement that has continued to protest for freedom. Standing strong ever since the year 1969, the movement first found its base through the women’s liberation protest that witnessed women advocating their rights and burning bras on the streets to break free from social norms. Many significant and influential female faces soon joined the process to present and express their support.

As days and decades passed, the movement returned to take the spotlight in newer formats, one of which was filmmaker Pedro Almodovar protest against Instagram to present his film– Madres Paralelas’ poster featuring nipple.

It is exactly when the internet found its new way to address every woman’s view through the free nipple movement. Soon, the most notable celebrities and media personalities alongside fashion’s most iconic designers joined the protest by questioning the guidelines of every social media handle, that banned it in the name of “sexual content.” The idea was to simply normalise and desexualise the image of a woman’s breasts. And as per policies laid down by Meta, a picture of someone from the transgender or LGBTQIA community posing with bared chest or even a breast-feeding mother would come on the radar of social media’s strict nudity policy. Which btw just happened recently!

Many celebrities in the recent past also tackled the idea of baring their breasts and desexualising the image by choosing important social events to wear a sheer dress. Much like Miley Cyrus and Kim Kardashian advocating against Meta’s rules, actress Florence Pugh was one of the recent faces to join the movement as she arrived in a see-through Valentino dress while attending a fashion show. The actress also wrote down a heartfelt note after her pictures from the event turned into controversial news, and she also questioned “How can my nipples offend you that much?”

But after almost a decade-long protest, Meta has reportedly decided to finally lift its ban against pictures featuring bare breasts. According to recommendations by Meta’s oversight board, the old policy was a product of a binary perspective put on clear distinctions of gender. And as Meta understands the policy’s lack of inclusivity, it is likely to tweak its already existing guidelines to help cater to every user with policies that of course don’t come in the way of their liberty. Under Meta, Facebook and Instagram are likely to follow this recommendation and lay down clear, “objective, rights-respecting criteria.” This new change in the guidelines will also help reduce the hyper-sexualisation of a woman’s nipples and help them practice their rights and freedom in the virtual world as well.

While Meta is yet to respond to this suggestion, a representative shared Meta “welcomes the board’s decision in this case.” Rethinking its policies that discriminate on the basis of gender and sex, Meta is likely to improve and create a modernised format of guidelines, wherein even the AI understands a difference between porn and a bare breast picture posted for a cause.
