Delhi Court Tells Unnao Rape Survivour To Leave House Only When Necessary, After Informing Personal Security

This isn’t a world for women. And if any of us thought that the more time passes, the more world progresses, things would get better for women, we’re having a crisis of faith right now. Because this society only seems to be regressing. The scales are still tipped in the favour of men, and women continue to bear the cruelest consequences even when they are survivors of violent crimes, seeking justice from a legal system that swore to protect them. As the case drags on, the Unnao rape survivor and her family have pretty much been in a house arrest situation of sorts, unable to step out unless absolutely necessary, and having round the clock personal security on them.

You’d think, with the case being sub judice and so explosive, personal security ought to be what keeps the survivor and her family safe from harassment and intimidation tactics by the accused. Unfortunately in this case, the survivor has submitted an application in court, alleging that she and her family were being harassed by her security detail, who she claimed were restricting her from exercising her liberties.

On Monday, District and Sessions Judge Dharmesh Sharma directed the Unnao rape survivor that she should only go out when it is necessary, and she must inform her personal security officers before she does that. So if she or her family members have to go outside Delhi for case-related matters, they will have to let the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Assistant Commandant know about it prior, so a proper security detail can be provided.

To the common man, this seems like the right thing to do until the case is not disposed of. But we’re all aware of the ways in which women who come forth to speak the truth about their abusers are treated in this country. They and their harassed even further in an attempt to break their spirit so that they drop the pursuit of justice. And intimidation is not always direct. Psychological intimidation can happen in subtle, indirect, and sometimes unsuspecting ways too.

While rapists and assaulters get bail and roam the streets freely, the Unnao rape survivour, a woman whose life has borne a horrible ordeal already, is further forced to live a prison life, her liberties taken away from her! How much worse can it get? And since we know enough of custodial intimidation from news reports, who is to say there won’t be any here?

Here we thought, we were progressing and would be driving flying cars in the sky by 2050. But it’s 2021, and it looks like women will probably be riding bullock carts on the ground when that happens, because the skies would not be ‘safe’ for them either.
