Tik Tok Provided A Safe Space For Mia Khalifa. Her Stories About Being Manipulated By People In The Porn Industry Are Shocking

FI Mia Khalifa And The Manipulative Porn Industry

There was a time in my life when I used to call myself a feminist even though I wasn’t really one. Sure, I believed that men and women were equal. I would learn only later that there’s more to it. The problem with my feminism was that it wasn’t intersectional. This is still the case for many flag bearers of equality today (*cough* J.K. Rowling *cough*). For all our righteous anger, we exclude the identities of many. Women of colour, queer women, transgender women, sex workers, porn stars and every other marginalised woman must be fought for. We are so quick to call ourselves feminists, but not half of that energy comes out in support any of the aforementioned groups.

Mia Khalifa joined Tiktok not too long ago and quickly gained a huge following. Now, thousands have taken a stand with the hashtag #JusticeForMia. Not only have Tiktok users made videos in support of her, but there’s also a petition for the cause. At first, I was confused too. Most of us have been unaware of the injustice Mia Khalifa has faced. But it’s time we learn about it.

On 18th June, she posted a Tiktok where she described her time as a porn star as “the lowest, most toxic, most uncharacteristic 3 months” of her life when she was 21. Most people didn’t even know that she was in the adult film industry for such a short time span.

Later, on 25th June, she posted a thread on Twitter that detailed the exploitation and manipulation she faced at the hands of the industry. Her experience is horrifying and saddening. Soon enough, the hashtag and petition was created to support her.

In fact, Mia herself has used her audience on Tiktok for a lot more than to tell her own story. She has been an active advocate for the Black Lives Matter movement and has given her platform to black users who have an important message to share. While most celebrities are comfortably posting black squares, she is one of the few strong and passionate ones talking about BLM as well as the Yemen crisis.

Mia Khalifa is talking about an industry that’s already fraught with controversies. But she’s showing the ugly side of it and we should be listening. For too long, we have sexualised her – that’s been her singular identity, questioned her character, and reduced her to a label she doesn’t want to identify with from our high horse of moral superiority. It needs to stop. The exploitative behaviour of the porn industry should be recognised and the people responsible must be held accountable.
