Stress During Pregnancy Can Increase Negative Emotions In Babies, Reveals Study. Ladies, It’s Time To De-Stress!

If you know anything about the concept of pregnancy, then you should know that it is quite difficult to carry a baby inside your body for nine months. During this period, the mother’s body undergoes a lot of changes and that can lead to mental stress which is not good for her and her baby. Well, if you don’t want to believe us, then you should read this recent study that says the exact same thing. A recent study revealed that stress in pregnant women can increase negative emotions in babies. This is such bad news, to be honest!

The findings of the study, which was published in the journal, ‘Infancy’ revealed that women who experience stress during pregnancy had infants who were more, sad, fearful, and distressed. This is one of the first studies that measure mothers’ experience of stress in real-time on many occasions. It enables a closer look at whether changes in mothers’ stress levels across pregnancy impact the development of the infant.

The lead study author – Leigha MacNeill, a research assistant professor of medical social sciences at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a member of the Northwestern Institute for Innovations in Developmental Sciences (DevSci) mentioned that such research often examines stress as a static or unchanging construct. Furthermore, she added that most of us have a lot of ebbs and flows in our stress depending on what is going around us.

She said that such studies capture the maternal-fetal environment as it relates to how babies develop over time.
MacNeill explained that a woman who has consistent levels of stress over pregnancy and another woman who moves between very high and very low levels of stress over pregnancy can have a similar average level of stress in the end, but it may not best capture the meaningful differences in what the fetus is exposed to.

According to the researchers, having a better understanding of the nature of stress during pregnancy may inform prevention efforts and it can include helping the mother reach a consistent level of calm before or at the onset of pregnancy.
