New Study Shows That Optimistic Women Live Longer. Considering Women’s Situation Around The World, That’s Gonna Be Hard

I am by far not the most optimistic person on the planet. No, I would definitely am not some epitome of optimism. I do tend to look at the world’s situations from the glass half-empty perspective. And honestly? Rightfully so! Have you seen how we as a society are doing? Call me dramatic but the world is doomed and pessimism is the only understandable mindset. However, a recent study has shown that women that are optimistic live longer and based on my aforementioned monologue, you can see that I am definitely not lasting long.

Research of over 1,50,000 women in the United States discovered a link between optimism and long life. The study, published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, looked at data from the Women’s Health Initiative, a long-term study that included 1,61,808 postmenopausal women in the United States between 1993 and 1998.

At the time of enrollment, participants in the study took a test that examined their optimism, among other things. The researchers analysed the data from 1,59,255 individuals to their longevity. However, the study participants who died within two years of enrollment were omitted from the analysis, as their health may have influenced their optimism, as were those who did not finish the test.

The study enlisted women aged 50 to 79 and collected data and survey answers for roughly 26 years. The most optimistic quarter volunteers were likely to live up to 5.4% longer and were 10% more likely to be living past the age of 90 as compared to the least optimistic quarter members. After accounting for demographics, chronic diseases, and depression, these findings remained consistent. Regular exercise and a healthy diet contributed to less than a quarter of the optimism-lifespan connection, indicating that additional factors may be at work.

The need for the key to a long life is completely lost on me, to be honest. With the way the world is going right now, I don’t understand why anyone would want to suffer here longer than they already are. Moreover, what reason do women even have to be optimistic? With the state we are all in, do women even have any reason to remain optimistic? But if you are one of those people who want to humour their inner Chris Traeger and have a long life, be positive and optimistic, I guess. As for me, I am certain I am not lasting long with the way I and society are going.
