Study Shows Sharp Rise In Cervical Cancer Among Women In Early 30s. Keep An Eye Out For These Symptoms

In recent times, a lot of studies have been done with regard to women. One of the most recent ones shows that the chances of cervical cancer have increased over the years. But this is not a steady increase, it is a rather sharp one – especially among women who are in their early 30s. Despite the fact that screening for human papillomavirus (HPV) can prevent this cancer, there are over 14,000 new cases that will be diagnosed this year and more than 4,000 women will die due to cervical cancer.

The study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association highlighted that cervical cancer is mostly related to human papillomavirus (HPV) and screening for which can prevent this cancer. And yet the cases of this cancer have increased sharply among women in their early 30s.

As per reports, the associate professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences at MUSC, Ashish Deshmukh, said, “HPV is a group of over 200 viruses. At least 14 high-risk HPV types can cause several types of cancers, including cervical, anal, and head, and neck cancers. In the era of the overall decline in cancer incidence, cancers caused by HPV are unfortunately rising.”

Furthermore, he said that for the last two years they are trying to understand why the continuous decline in cervical cancer stopped in 2012 and now have reached a critical turning point. For the study, they collected data about cancer incidence from “all 50 states and covers over 98 percent of the US population.”

From back in 2012, there has been a 3% increase every year in cervical cancer incidence in women belonging to their early 30s. The study also showed that the rates increased in non-Hispanic White women, Hispanic women, and other ethnic groups but it did not increase in non-Hispanic Black women.

The study also showed that cervical cancer screening has declined dramatically in recent years – especially among women between the age of 21-29. For those unversed, this cancer doesn’t have symptoms but things like vaginal bleeding after intercourse, watery, bloody vaginal discharge that may be heavy and have a foul smell, and pelvic pain, can be a cause of concern. If you experience any of these symptoms, meet your doctor at the earliest.
