Singer Sunidhi Chauhan Was Told Her Voice Sounded Like A Man. She Proved Them Wrong

From saucy dance numbers like Shiela Ki Jawaani and Crazy Kiya Re, to feel good songs like Hey Shona and Te Amo, to iconic and evergreen tracks like Desi Girl and Dilliwaali Girlfriend, singer Sunidhi Chauhan has given us some of our most loved and cherished songs in the industry. There ever goes by a party that feels incomplete without playing one or two of her numbers, for it is needless to say that her songs have now become an Indian household staple. But it wasn’t always so.

Sunidhi Chauhan rose to fame with her debut song ladki deewani dekho in the film Shastra, recently talked about how there was a time, very early on in her career when she was told to pack her bags and go home by two big music directors.

Opening up about the kind of criticism and sexism she experienced while making her way into to the industry, Sunidhi shared, “I did get to hear things like, ‘You should pack your bags and go home because you cannot sing Lag Jaa Gale in the original key.'” And sadly, that wasn’t all that was said to her.

Recalling how a music director made some nasty comments on her voice, she shared, “Then another music director told me, ;This kind of voice is not going to work, you have too strong a voice. It sounds like a man’s voice on an actress. Pack your bags. Abhi ek-do saal ki baat hai (It is just a matter of one or two years), then you go home.””

Little did these music directors know that Sunidhi wasn’t the kind to back down, and would go on to record hit singles with the very same directors who once dismissed her voice for being too manly. Of course, by that time the music directors seemed to have conveniently forgotten about the incident, shares Sunidhi.

Today Sunidhi Chauhan is a household name in India, as she has made a sound place for herself in the industry, earning respect every step of the way. It’s true that every industry is harsh and difficult for women to break into, but Sunidhi is example, that it isn’t impossible.
