Sania Mirza Talks About All The Things She Has Heard Growing Up As A Girl Who Played Sports

The unfortunate truth about this world is that there is no avoiding sexism. It’s rooted in our beliefs and traditions. All women have to face it in their day-to-day lives. Just the other day, my mother told me that I had nothing to worry about because all houses, nowadays, permit their daughters-in-law to work. She said it so casually but obviously it didn’t sit well with me. We’ve grown up hearing these deeply problematic things. Everything eventually comes down to marriage and motherhood. And it was worse if you were a girl you loved to play sports. Athletic girls are looked down upon, people are scared they will permanently tan themselves and of course, who will marry a sportswoman? And what about children? It’s horrible. However, leave it up to Sania Mirza to open up about these things in a reel titled “Things you grow up hearing as a girl who decides to play a sport”. A lot of her points can be applied to all women!

Growing up in Hyderabad, Sania Mirza first started playing tennis at the age of 6. She was trained by her father Imran Mirza. As you obviously know, today she is one of our top sportspeople and she has continued to make our country exceedingly proud. She is a world champion. However, even her talent and accomplishments weren’t enough to keep sexist comments at bay. Sania posted a reel to point out all the rubbish things people have told her over the years. We love her for keeping things so real!

In her reel, as is the trend, Sania used text captions and her facial expressions with Eminem’s FACK playing in the background. Her text on the reel included things like “If you become so dark who will marry you?”, “How will you go for tournaments when you have to run a family?” and “Your sporting career ends as soon as you become a mother.” Sexist and disgusting, much?

Even though she was told that her career would end once she got married and had a child, Sania has been busting stereotypes and proving everyone wrong over and over again. In 2019, she returned to the court for the first time after the birth of her son, Izhaan. She has proved that a woman can have a successful career, be it sports or anything else, and still have and care for a family. Sania Mirza is an inspiration.

It’s time to change the narrative, don’t you think? Women have been shamed for following their passions for too long. How about instead of telling us that our careers will end and we will end up in the kitchen serving our husbands, society supports and encourages us? We’ve had enough of these sexist comments. Not even Sania Mirza was spared from them. It’s ridiculous.

More power to Sania Mirza!
