She publicly announced that she will retire from tennis after 2022.

As per reports, Sania Mirza said that 2022 will be her last year on the professional tennis circuit on Wednesday, she announced this after her first-round loss in the women’s doubles in the Australian Open. “I’ve decided that this will be my last season. I’m taking it week by week. Not sure if I can last the season, but I want to,” she said. She further added that her recovery is taking a bit longer and now her body is wearing down. Sania mentioned that she’s also putting her three-year-old son Izhaan at risk as she’s travelling with him. But she wants to play this season because she’s enjoying it.

Sania Mirza has represented India in many International meets including Asian Games, Olympics, Commonwealth and has won several medals as well. She has won a total of 14 medals of which 6 are gold.

The sportswoman’s name appeared in the list of ‘50 Heroes of Asia’ by Times in 2005 due to her exceptional game in the sport. The tennis player also made it to the list of the ‘100 most influential people in the world by Times Magazine in 2016.

She ranked No.1 in doubles by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) in April 2015. She has also won the WTA finals twice, once in the year 2014 and then in 2015. Sania Mirza became the only Indian female tennis player to win a WTA title of any kind.

She teamed up with another tennis star, Mahesh Bhupathi, and won the Australian Open in the year 2019 and the French Open in 2012. In 2014, Sania won her third Grand Slam in Mixed Doubles at US Open with Bruno Soares.

Mirza has won three Grand Slams in Women Doubles. Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis won the 2015 US Open and 2015 Wimbledon titles. The duo also went on to win their third Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in 2016.
