Minister Bisahulal Singh Says Upper Caste Women Should Be Dragged Out To Work. Okay Then!

I don’t understand what it is about old men in power that think that they’re in a position to comment on matters concerning women. Moreover, it is borderline amusing to me when they choose to get offended on behalf of women just to attack each other. Like they use women’s dignities to hide their own intolerance towards criticism. I saw this recently when BJP Leader Aditya Jha got offended over Vir Das’ monologue called ‘I Come From Two Indias’ saying that it was derogatory towards women. However, I (and many women I have spoken to) have agreed that what Das said was nothing but the harsh reality of our country. Now we have a similar situation here with Minister for Food and Civil Supplies Department, Bisahulal Singh said that upper caste women need to be dragged out to work. Yes, you heard that write. Let us talk about this very flawed perception of feminism and equality.

Minister Bisahulal Singh has come forth and said “Thakur-Thakar (upper caste) keep their women hostage in houses. They don’t allow them to work in society. The women from the upper caste should be dragged out of their houses and made work in society to ensure equality.” Impeccable logic! However, to give him credit, I do feel as though he wanted to advocate for equality. However, his choice of words was… unfavourable.

The video of his statement has gone viral and garnered hate from the netizens. Not only the general public but also the Congress spokesperson KK Mishra was offended as well. He said according to reports, “Bisahulal Singh, who is actually ‘Bikaulal Singh’, should make it clear whether it is his personal opinion or he made this statement on behalf of his government. If it is his government’s opinion, chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan should apologize for insulting the women.”

First, can we stop talking on behalf of women regarding what is offensive to us and what isn’t? Moreover, the point of equality is to give women a choice. While financial independence is essential for equality, those two are not mutually exclusive.
