Mental Health Awareness Month: 8 Ways To Lift Your Spirits On Days When You Feel Low

I have dealt with my fair share of mental health issues for the past decade or so. I have sought therapy but I do acknowledge that I have a long way to go and a lot to work on. And let’s be fair, we all have days where we just feel low and aren’t doing very well. Trust me, been there, done that. I have had countless days over the past decade where my mental health hasn’t been doing well and being the recluse that I am, I prefer not to socialise when I am feeling up to it. I have tried a lot of things over the years which help me life my spirits and I will impart some of my findings to you. So here are some things you can do to make yourself feel better when your jag is suna suna and koi rahe na jab aapka :

1. Cook it up

What is one of the few good things about life? Good food, of course! And I personally find a weird therapeutic joy in cooking or baking. I personally perceive it as a form of self-care. Putting in all the work, care and effort into cooking or baking for yourself with the end product that will tantalise your tastebuds just fills me with a sense of satisfaction and joy.

2. skincare/haircare

This too has more to do with self-care than anything else. Whenever I feel low and am upset, I like taking the time to look after myself. Be it through haircare, skincare or grooming myself. I like being able to distract myself by just looking after myself and feeling better at the end of it.

3. Escape into the world of fiction

Good old escapism, my friends! If reality is too overwhelming for you, turn to the world of fiction. Books, movies, series etc whatever floats your boat. Forgetting about your worries for a little bit gives you the chance to calm down and gives you a break. You might also end up coming back to whatever is bothering you with a new perspective.

4. Writing

As a writer, I personally have found it to be soothing to put my thoughts onto paper/screen. Writing helps me gain clarity on what is bothering me and what I should do to make myself feel better. Moreover, it also gives me a broader perspective of what the problem is by allowing me to look at it practically and rationally.

5. Aromatherapy

I don’t know about you but I am huge on good fragrances. If I enter a room with an essential oil diffuser or scented candle lit up, it will instantly make me feel better. Many a times I have also slept better because some of these beautiful scents quelled my anxiety and lulled me to sleep.

6. dressing up/makeup

Usually, we dress up for others or to go outside but why not for ourselves? Call me crazy, but I have sat at 2 A.M. at night with YouTube tutorials in front of a mirror and tried on a new makeup look… and then proceed to marvel at my own work like a weirdo. But who cares? It makes me feel better to just do something for myself and not for external validation. You can do the same by dressing up and putting on outfits that boost your confidence and lift your spirits.

7. dance it off

The best party is a dance party, periodt! Put on some music and just dance by yourself! Sing along, let your hair loose and get rid of all the stress and sadness by dancing it all away.

8. solo dates

I believe that the best thing that you can do for yourself when you feel low is to remind yourself that humans suck and you don’t need them (or maybe I am the only introverted recluse here idk). Regardless, being able to be comfortable with your own is important. So go on a walk, sit at a cafe with a book, go out for dinner, whatever makes you happy.

Most importantly, be patient with yourself and treat yourself with compassion and kindness. Try paying heed to what you actually need. Remember that your feelings are valid. While all these tips are here to help you, feel free to have a crying session if that is what you need to let it all out. And wherever you are in your mental health journey, know that you aren’t alone. It is a long and tiring road but you will get there.
