Meet Justice Ayesha Malik, The First Woman Supreme Court Judge Of Pakistan. This Is A Step Forward

Over the years, the term ‘feminism’ has gotten a bad name. The people who identify as feminists are told to not take everything so seriously. People are either too ignorant or just grandfathered into their patriarchal ways to notice the glaring problems. However, in the last few years, things have changed for the better. In no way has gender equality been achieved but we are well on our way. And every day we see examples of just that. For instance, Justice Ayesha Malik is all set to become the first woman Supreme Court judge of Pakistan. This is a major step forward.

Justice Ayesha Malik has been nominated by Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed. A judicial committee is considering Malik as a judge for the top court. They will meet on 9 September. She is currently at the Lahore High Court and ranks number four on the seniority list. This is a historic move for Pakistan.

If elevated to the Supreme Court, Justice Ayesha Malik will serve as a judge until March 2031. She will fill the place of Justice Mushir Alam who is retiring on 17 August. The news of a woman finally having a seat on the Pakistan Supreme Court has all of social media celebrating. Justice Ayesha Malik is breaking glass ceilings and smashing stereotypes.

Justice Ayesha Malik studied law at the Pakistan College of Law in Lahore. After this, she did her Master’s from the prestigious Harvard Law School. In 2012, she became a judge at the Lahore High Court. In 2019, Justice Ayesha Malik became the president of the Committee for Protection of Women Judges in Lahore. She is also part of The International Association of Women Judges (IAWJ), an initiative of women empowerment through equality and justice.

Having a woman on the Supreme Court roster is going to help Pakistan progress in more ways than one. In fact, in January 2021, Justice Ayesha Malik passed an extremely landmark ruling. She declared two-finger and hymen tests on sexual assault survivors “illegal and against the Constitution of Pakistan.”

This move will also help the status of women in Pakistan. It’s going to empower them and enable them to follow their dreams. More power to Justice Ayesha Malik!
