Malala Yousafzai Calls Out Indian Government Over Karnataka Hijab Row. Says, “Stop The Marginalisation Of Muslim Women.”

While India has seen a lot of major conflicts when it comes to communities and religion, there are still certain controversies that end up surprising me. The most recent one at that is the Karnataka hijab row which has taken a lot of people by surprise. While the petitions are still being discussed in the Karnataka High Court, Malala Yousafzai has spoken about the marginalisation of Muslim women and objectification of women and urged Indian leaders to do something about this.

Nobel laureate and women’s rights activist Malala Yousafzai has shown her awareness and moreover concern regarding the ongoing hijab row in Karnataka. Malala took to Twitter and shared an article talking about the same with the caption, ‘“College is forcing us to choose between studies and the hijab”. Refusing to let girls go to school in their hijabs is horrifying. Objectification of women persists — for wearing less or more. Indian leaders must stop the marginalisation of Muslim women.’

Malala is known to stand for women’s rights, especially the right to education of Muslim women, hence, her concern and stance over the hijab row in Karnataka is understandable. Bollywood celebrities such as Swara Bhasker, Richa Chadha and Shreya Dhanwanthary have also Tweeted about the hijab row and lent their support to the marginalised and oppressed Muslim students. Amidst all this, Karnataka CM Basavaraj Bommai has announced that schools and colleges in Karnataka will remain shut for 3 days to solve the matter.

It honestly is beyond me what the problem here is? Why has a ban like this been put in the first place? And how are female students that are wearing hijabs being a bother to anyone? I do support Malala Yousafzai and everyone else’s perspective on this. How are we going to discuss educating women and then take away that opportunity from one particular group under the guise of an unnecessary and cruel hijab row?
