Kirti Kulhari Said Marriage Should Be Primarily About The Couple And Not Their Families. It Makes Sense!

Most desi families don’t see marriage as an optional institution; they see it as an indispensable part of your life, a milestone you must cross to be deemed a reputable adult. A lone spinster or a divorcee doesn’t enjoy the same space in the social hierarchy that a married woman enjoys. That isn’t great, considering women in general are discriminated against but some have it worse. However, Kirti Kulhari doesn’t believe in the portrayal of marriage the way it is, in our society.

On April 1st, Kirti Kulhari shared an announcement on her Instagram feed about her separation from husband Saahil Sehgal. She had specified that they hadn’t taken a divorce but were separated. She expressed how it is a difficult time and that when two people part ways, it hurts their folks too. Kulhari had also shared that she is in a good place though.

Recently, in an interview with radio host Siddharth Kannan, she shared her views on marriage and how it is overrated. She added that she doesn’t believe that love or companionship is overrated, though. Kulhari pointed out that she could be in a relationship with someone and “still choose to not be married to that person.”

Kirti Kulhari explained that we’ve all been conditioned with the age-old notions around what marriage is. However, she added that with her marriage, she realised that we make a big deal out of it. She added, “Yes, marriage is important for the social structure and this and that, but I think beyond everything, a marriage needs to happen between two people. Their hearts need to be connected. I am sorry, but it is not about families coming together. It starts and ends with these two people, and that’s how it is for me.” She said she can do everything people do in a marriage with a partner, without the label of ‘marriage’ to it.

In an interview with Hindustan Times, Kirti Kulhari had said that walking out of a marriage is incredibly difficult because there are families involved. But she pointed out that it should be her choice to walk out of a marriage, and not be influenced by other people involved. It’s only fair, isn’t it?
