Kerala Youth Commission Provides Self Defense Training To Women Free Of Cost

“Prevention is better than cure”, one of the oldest, most over-used yet relevant idioms to ever exist. This sentence serves as life advice for everyone at a time like this, especially when the one in question is a woman. Already habituated to walking while constantly looking over our shoulders, us women have stayed on edge for far too long, in an attempt to preempt any attack on ourselves. And while caution and attentiveness might come in handy, one other thing that might help is knowing how to defend ourselves in case a mishap does occur. And for this, knowing self defense does come in handy.

Kerala is making sure that women have full access to such training which can further help them in defending themselves in face of harm. We say this after a state run agency is offering a platform for women to get training in martial arts for free of cost in Kerala.

Kerala Youth Commission aims at strengthening the position of women, and empowering them with the means to protect themselves at a time when crime against women is rising by the minute. This is the reason the state’s youth commission is making a concentrated effort to teach young girls and women martial arts.

Commission officials stated that the mission of such an initiative was to prepare every woman in the southern state for self-defence against physical assault. And we believe it was a rather befitting initiative to undertake, one that other states must draw inspiration from and follow suit.

The officials further shared that, ‘Those women, aged between 18 and 40 years who have registered with the Community Volunteer Force of the state government can apply for the free martial arts training’. Meanwhile Chintha Jerome, Chairperson of the Youth Commission, said the training programme would commence in Thiruvananthapuram district in the initial phase and would later be seen extending to other parts of the southern state in the later phases of the programme.Of course, the argument that men be taught to not commit the crime still holds true but we will take what we get at this point.

We are hopeful that with such efforts being made to make women self-sufficient and prepare them to safeguard their own selves without feeling the need to depend on anyone, would offer them a fighting chance in the face of the crime, and help in controlling the increasing crime rate.
