Karan Johar Says Women Will Get Producer Credits In Women-Centric Films. Thank You So Much For Your Charity!
So there is this very annoying and equally real trend that I have noticed going on in the Bollywood industry, since the fight for feminism has picked up pace with women and actresses no longer willing to be mute spectators. It’s a trend where every time women make noise against the subtle prejudice against them, the fraternity offers them a little lollipop of tokenism, hoping to buy our silence and not ruffle too many feathers, basically asking us to shut up. And the recent example for this was witnessed at the trailer launch of Dharma Productions’ upcoming movie Good Newwz where the cast and crew were seen paying some age old lip service to the women in the crowd.

Starring A-listers like Kareena Kapoor Khan, Akshay Kumar, Diljit Dosanjh and Kiara Advani, the actors along with the producers and directors were seen making what they call a ‘statement’. It all started as and when Kareena Kapoor and Kiara Advani walked in at the stage, pushing their co-stars Akshay Kumar and Diljit Dosanjh in on strollers, shoving pacifiers in their mouths and insinuating that women won’t be pushed around anymore. In fact it is going to be the exact opposite.

And while we have to give them full marks on getting the semantics right, they were indeed far from getting the emotion right. We say this after KJo made his speech about addressing the issue of gender and pay disparity in the industry. He said, “We pay everyone well, irrespective of gender, or what are they doing on the film, be it actors or technicians. Soon, actresses will be given producer credit as well in a lot of female-centric films.” Such benevolence, much wow.
Once again, the filmmaker in an attempt to promote feminism ended up making it sound like blatant tokenism, one that no one would really appreciate. In fact, during the course of the event, he even admitted to saying how he often finds himself in trouble for sending “the right message to the wrong people” and we hate to point out, that he may have done just that, yet again.

Women, if they are pitching in on it, should be given due credits whether it is a women-centric film or not, period. It shouldn’t come along as an act of charity at the hands of men, who think that since time is now changing, this might do well for the business and audience. So maybe next time you want to do something that should’ve been done years ago, don’t make it sound like a favor on the womankind. We don’t need handouts, we need equality.
