IPS Officer Violet Baruah Becomes First-Ever Woman Inspector General Of Assam Police

Stories about strong and independent women are so inspiring for me. The story of mothers, wives, daughters who don’t live by the set of rules made by our society. They set a goal for themselves and achieve it with their grit and determination just like Violet Baruah did. On Monday, Indian Police Services (IPS) officer Violet Baruah got promoted to the rank of Inspector General in Assam Police and with that, she became the first-ever woman to achieve this position. This is a huge accomplishment when the representation of women in India’s police is quite dismal.

In an official notification, the Home Department of Assam government promoted Violet Baruah who also received the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service this year, to the rank of Inspector General of Police. She is the senior-most woman IPS Officer in Assam Police. Currently, Violet Baruah is posted as the Deputy Inspector General of Police (BTAD) in Kokrajhar district. According to the reports, she will be in the ‘Super Time Scale-II of IPS’ of pay matrix.

Recently, Baruah expressed her happiness about the new accomplishment of her career and said that she has always accepted every single challenge that came along in the job. “I have never said no to any posting or task in my career. Rejecting a job has never been my style of functioning. That is why I was out of Guwahati (where state police headquarters is situated) for most of the period of my service,” she said in an interview. The 59-year-old IPS officer further added that she personally chose a field job and didn’t face any barrier in it. Violet Baruah also added that a lot of women are joining the police force but she wants more women to come forward.

In 1992, Violet Baruah had joined the police force as an Assam Police Services officer and was nominated to IPS in 2004. She believes that gender empowerment is everywhere, but what we need is “gender mainstreaming”. So far, Baruah has served as the superintendent of police in four districts which includes Morigaon, Goalpara, Cachar, and Barpeta, besides working in the CID wing of the Assam Police. In 2012, Violet Baruah had received the President’s Medal for Meritorious Service

And it’s so inspiring that women in India are breaking the age-old gender norms in every area. Their dedication and hard work inspire so many young girls and women to put their best foot forward.  Their achievements are a ray of sunshine for women throughout the country and teach them that no goal is too high and that they can achieve it no matter what society says or does. It’s time for women to rule this country for real.
