Majority Of India’s Women Workforce Has Stopped Looking For Jobs As They Cannot Find The Right One

The pandemic changed a lot of things for people around the world – especially in India. And I believe the biggest change Indians went through was recognising the toxicity of the hustle and work culture. Along with this and India’s job creation problem, the country’s economy and future are at a higher risk. In fact, recent data suggest that most Indians, especially women, are not able to find the right job and hence are exiting the labour force entirely. Millions of Indians are not even looking for work anymore. This is scary.

The recent data provided by the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy Pvt. (CMIE), a private research firm based in Mumbai, revealed that Indians, majorly women, who are frustrated by not finding the right kind of job are exiting labour force and are not even looking for jobs anymore.

And this is a big problem for India since one of the world’s fastest-expanding economies heavily relies on young workers to drive growth and the latest numbers are not very satisfactory, to say the least. In fact, data suggests that between the years 2017 and 2022, the overall labour participation rate decreased from 46% to 40% and as far as women are concerned the data is even grimmer. So much so that 21 million Indians have disappeared from the labour force, leaving only 9% of the eligible population employed or searching for jobs.

As per CMIE, more than half of the 900 million Indians who are of legal working age don’t have a job as of now. Kunal Kundu, who is an economist with Societe Generale GSC Pvt in Bengaluru said, “The large share of discouraged workers suggests that India is unlikely to reap the dividend that its young population has to offer… India will likely remain in a middle-income trap, with the K-shaped growth path further fueling inequality.”

A report by McKinsey Global Institute states that if India wants to keep up with a youth bulge, then it has to create at least a minimum of 90 million new non-farm jobs by 2030. And this would require an annual GDP growth of 8% to 8.5%.
