In Pakistan, A Woman Was Strangled And Shot Dead After She Allegedly Refused Two Marriage Proposals

One would think that with the pandemic going on, and millions of lives being lost every single day across the  globe, we’d have maxed out on the bad news coming in. What could be worse than watching the world eradicate itself at the hands of a virus, right? Except, wrong. Because what is worse is the fact that whether or not we are faring well in the world, what doesn’t end is crime against women. We say this after the news about a British woman being strangled and shot dead in Pakistan came to surface.

A news that has left us as enraged as it has left us disheartened, Mayra Zulfiqar, the 25-year-old woman British woman who had a Pakistani origin was found dead at her rented accommodation in Lahore’s Defence Housing Authority on Monday, after she was killed for refusing two proposals. Wow, the male ego.

And the alleged reason for her murder has been that the woman turned down two marriage proposals from two men, due to which she met such an unfortunate fate.

Lahore’s Police Assistant Superintendent Sidra Khan shared that Mayra Zulfiqar had arrived from Belgium almost three months ago and was residing in a rented apartment with her friend Iqra. One of the prime suspects for Mayra’s murder is in fact her own friend Saad Ameer Butt.

Sidra Khan was quoted saying by the PTI, “Butt wanted to marry her as he was keen to get foreign nationality through this marriage. Upon her refusal, he allegedly shot her dead.” As of now, Mayra’s parents who live in the UK have been informed about it.

Meanwhile what has also come to light is the police complaint filed by Mayra’s uncle Muhammad Nazir who lives in Lahore and shared that Mayra had visited his home only a day before her murder. It was him that Mayra confided in about her two friends had shared proposals, but she turned them down. She also allegedly went on to tell him about how they threatened her with “dire consequences”, upon refusal.

Mayra was a law graduate from the Middlesex University, and it is a shame that we lost yet another woman to the incapacity of men being able to handle rejection. The police reports share, “The chief investigating officer in the murder inquiry told the BBC that police teams were targeting addresses in Islamabad and Lahore but that no arrests had yet been made,” as the investigation is still going on.
